Learn what makes tsunamis grow

Video Assignment

You must create a 3-8 minute audio-visual file designed to be used in a secondary school classroom that addresses the following four topics:

  • how tsunami warning systems work
  • how tsunamis are formed
  • the history of previous tsunami disasters
  • the human impact of tsunamis

You may either use the digital camera available in the library to film your educational short or Flowgram, online software that will allow you to create an interactive guided presentation.

Digital Camera Instructions:

You will have access to video recording and editing equipment for 1.5 hours.  It is suggested that you use a carefully crafted script in order to avoid the need for heavy editing.  You may record a combination of pictures, photos, maps, and other forms of media as well.  If you are only planning to talk about items that could be put in a power point presentation then you should be making a Flowgram instead.  Try to be creative and to grab your viewer's attention.  Before you begin filming you must submit a video script.  Videos can easily have poor flow if you do not make a good outline. More information is found on the process page and on the grading rubric, which is located on the evaluation page.

Examples of short videos follow:

1.  "Web Searches in Plain English" by the Common Craft is an example of a concise, well-organized, video.

2.  "Pendulums" by Science Theater is also well put together and stays focused.

3.  This is an example of a video that is catchy, but does not spend enough time on their main topic.  You should have some time that you spend grabbing the audience's attention, but it should not be 4/5 of the movie.

Flowgram Instructions

In order to use Flowgram you must collect a group of pictures and webpages that fully cover the topics you must discuss.  You will also make a powerpoint presentation that goes along with your talk.  You will then be able to record a verbal commentary on your pictures and slides.  You must complete the Flowgram Outline Page available on the process page before beginning work on your Flowgram.

A Flowgram tutorial is available from the Flowgram website and should be watched before you begin your outline.
